Big Mic went to Hawaii, and somehow made it back lol

Sooooo a few weeks back we had KSFM's Hella Summer (if you missed it, then you MISSED OUT) and after that your boy was ready for a motha funking VAY-CAY-SHUN!  So vacation is exactly what I did. I made my way over the Pacific Ocean, over to HAWAII! More specifically, to the island of Oahu where I stayed on Waikiki Beach.

The Trip Out - Hawaiian Airlines!

So lets start with the flight out. Your boy is called Big Mic because, well, I'm a big dude. So with this being a 5+ hour flight (and fortunately Hawaiian had some Non-Stop options) I upgraded to the "Extra Comfort" option to get an extra 5 inches of space, and about a week out I got an email with the option to bid for First Class seats. Now, I'm a pretty frugal guy, and I've never been in first class before, but I figured I'd take a chance and did the minimum bid (which still was a couple hundred dollars) and sure enough I got upgraded to first class!

So lets talk about first class. Because again, I had never sat in this magical world before. First off, immediately upon sitting in what was the biggest airplane seat I've ever sat in, I was immediately offered a Mai Tai (it was 8am in the morning, but I was not complaining!)

First time ever sitting 1st class (I won a bid to get it hella cheap lol) .... They give you a drink the minute you sit down lol good start to the trip #vacation #hawaii #maitai #pineapple #hawaiianairlines #firstclass

Then as you can see below, I got a nice little breakfast (with another Mai Tai), then they gave me a tablet to watch movies (Captain Marvel....and another Mai Tai), and then even dessert (and another Mai Tai!!!)

So drank a few more beverages over that 5 hour span, watched a couple movies on the tablet, leaned back in the comfy seat and took a lil nap, and finally arrived in Hawaii!!! I arranged for a shuttle to pick me up, dropped me off at my hotel, went up to my room...and O...M...G, this is the view I got!

Not mad at the view from the room!

So after getting over the stunning view of those awesome blue waters, made my way down and of course, began the grub sessions.... below is a spot called Tikis Bar, got some Panko-crusted Island fish, ribeye slices and chicken katsu skewers!

And of course...I had to get down to the sand and take a beach selfie with Diamond Head in the background (ohhhhh I got some Diamond Head stories for you on the way)

DAY 2 - I Climbed DIAMOND HEAD SON!

So hit a few bars and spots around the beach, but Hawaii is several hours behind California, so by 10p I was super tired and called it a night, and thank god I did because I had a beast ahead of me...that beast's name was DIAMOND HEAD!

On our way to climb that

Definitely one of the key landmarks when you are in Oahu, this thing is massive, and apparently people like to hike up it...and while its not a super long trail, it can get STEEP. So we woke up at 7am (10a in Cali, felt hella awake lol) and made our treck. It took over an hour, but the steep winding trail lead to some of the most beautiful views I've seen in some time! Plus, in the bottom pic you can see the progression of sweat I went through LOL

Was Soooooo smart to get here at 7am...was already warming up! Prepare as I barrage you with a blast of scenic shots lol #hawaii #honolulu #waikiki #diamondhead

Was super tough, kicked my ass, but I made it! It definitely built up quite an appetite, and made it to a spot I have been looking forward to for weeks, RAINBOW DRIVE IN!! Got a loco moco bowl, and the combo plate with so much Hawaiian deliciousness, I didnt leave one bite to be wasted!

This been the meal & restaurant I've been waiting for! Mixed combo & moco Loco bowl!

Decided to get a lil touristy so we decided to jump on the Atlantis Submarine and head under water to see what was going on.... fish...turtles...ships...pretty dope!

So while walking around, we stopped by a spot called Blue Note, and noticed that the legendary Ohio Players were going to be playing so we said screw it, got some tickets, and damn it, what a great experience!  These guys were probably all in their 70's but had the whole place standing and definitely showed these young artists a thing or two!  "Fire" "Love Rollercoaster" YEE!

Day 3 - Travel around Oahu

So on day 3, we decided to rent a car and drive around the island,  first stop was the Dole Pineapple Plantation. I actually went to Hawaii when I was a kid and vaguely remember going here. This place was a MAD HOUSE. Super packed for a Tuesday, the train tour had an hour wait, the food and concession lines were packed as hell, so we decided instead try out what was billed as the worlds biggest maze. It was fine, wish it was free because we made our way through pretty quick, but eh, it was fine lol.

But ohhhh after pineapples we made our way up to North Shore for another thing I was was looking forward to, and thats the North Shore Shrimp Trucks!  More specifically THE truck everyone talks about and thats Giovannis truck and their garlic shrimp!  The line was long, but the smells were making the wait bearable. When that plate of 12 shrimp and 2 scoops of rice came out, the messy joy of unshelling the shrimp and licking the garlicky, scampi'esque deliciousness off my fingers was well worth the drive up north!

About that time!

After that we made our way to "Turtle Beach" and saw an ocean filled with a whole bunch of...you guessed it, turtles! lol  This one I called Michaelangelo!

As we made our way back down, we randomly saw this beach on a place called "Kahana Bay" that was one of the most beautiful views of the ocean that i had to catch in this shot

While I would say this video doesn't fully give this view justice on a random beach we pulled up on... I will say technology is making it prettyyyyyy damn close

Day 4 - Beaches, music and food!

Other than a few stops to the beach, today was the first time I got to lay out on the beach and Waikiki Beach is some of the most beautiful water I've seen in a long time and spent a few hours out there enjoying the waves (which my burnt shoulders and neck definitely still show) and got my toes a little sandy

Think I got something in my toes

After burning and dehydrating myself on the beach, we decided to cool down and get some shave ice!  And that's shave ice, not shaved ice, dont get them twisted, this is the good stuff.

Rainbow shave ice... All the flavors

We were nearing the end of my final night in Hawaii and I was getting sad, but we had a few more stops planned, including dinner near the marina at Nicos, got some swordfish and ahi ribs, that's right RIBS!  FIRE

Grilled swordfish & Ahi Ribs! Last dinner in Hawaii was a great one! #hawaii #honolulu #oahu #nicos #fish #ahi #swordfish

So one of the reasons I ended up going to Hawaii, is my friend hip me to this group called Khruangbin, and we found out they were performing there at a place called The Republik. They are super instrumental, funky, soulful all in one, and saw one amazing show!

My soul has been cleansed...audible perfection @khruangbin

Hit up Dave and Busters afterwards because they do a cool Wednesday night party there (COME ON DAVE AND BUSTERS ROSEVILLE, WHATS GOOD? lol) and then it was almost time to depart!

Last Day - 1st class again!?

So it was time to head back, grabbed a quick breakfast (it was a breakfast burger, but wasnt great so not going to post it haha)  and a few days prior, Hawaiian airlines sent me another option to bid for first class.  Despite my wallet hurting after a week of food and fun, I said screw it, I bid...and again I was upgraded to first class! haha

Got another several drinks... got a tablet (OH AVENGERS END GAME! that knocked out a good 3 hours of the flight lol)   Got a snack...got a vegetable roll appetizer, and then a beef dinner)

Needless to say, this was a much needed vacation, and I've got to say, typically when I'm near the end of the vacation I cannot wait to get home, but I could have EASILY stayed in Hawaii another week.  The people are just so nice, the food is amazing, the views and weather is perfect. I highly recommend you try and fly out sometime if you can!
