Busta Rhymes Island

March 12, 2018

Social media users recently discovered something one Massachusetts man already knew -- a 1600-square-foot island is named after Bus-a-Bus.

A guy named Kevin O'Brien has been going to an unnamed island for over a decade now. He's spent so much time there that he's become the island's unofficial caretaker, planting fruit and cleaning up litter. O'Brien chose the name Busta Rhymes Island because he felt the island's amenities, such as rope-swinging and blueberries, are things he thinks the rapper would enjoy.

Years ago, O’Brien attempted to make the name official by submitting a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. However, he was informed that for a piece of land to be named after a celebrity, the individual must have been dead for at least five years. This rule is strictly for geological locations and not for structures like buildings, sports fields or monuments,

Though the name isn’t official, O’Brien was able to geotag Busta Rhymes Island on Google Maps. Click here to see the geotag.
