10 Dating Truths No One Will Tell You

After reading a number of dating-advice books, blogger Jen Glantz has concluded that such self-help tomes will only “twist your thoughts, your judgments and your actions around like a tangled computer chord, leaving you acting like some kind of robotic monster who says and does things completely out of character.” Instead, you should follow her advice on Huffington Post. Here are Glantz’s 10 dating truths she says no one (besides her) will tell you…

  1. If you want to date, you have to try- So stop “looking down at your phone all the time while you’re out in public and say hello more.”
  2. If you’re not passionate, why bother?  “There’s absolutely no point in settling down just to settle.”
  3. Make a list of everything you love and everything that bothers you. – This exercise will help you “start to understand who you are a bit more.”
  4. Look at other relationships as examples – Whether it’s your parents’ marriage or your friends’ relationships, “find comfort in knowing that this crazy little thing called love does, in fact, exist.”
  5. Go with your gut. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.- “Don’t ignore the red flags that wave frantically at you… on dates one through three.”
  6. Never, ever say you just don’t have time or you’re too busy- “It’s one of those things we tell ourselves because we desperately want to believe it.”
  7. Love is like a book.- “When it gets boring, or too complicated, put it down. Skip to the end.”
  8. If you aren’t sure whether or not you are interested in someone, you probably aren’t so call it quits.- “Don’t waste time letting something drag on that’s not meant to be.”
  9. Be yourself. “Talk about whatever you want. Order your favorite dish of chicken parm and eat it on a first date.”
  10. Don’t follow made-up rules of dating, liking calling the next day. Do what you want to do.- “The worst part of doing a case study on shredded love is having your memories corrupted by all the things you wish you did.”
